On Thursday morning, July 28, 2016, Glenn Eugene Smith of Trout Creek passed away at a Missoula hospital surrounded by close family. He was four-wheeling the previous evening in the mountains that he loved when he sustained a head injury from which he did not awake. Family and friends have been comforted knowing that he was simply doing what he enjoyed.
Glenn was born in Seattle on June 29, 1942. He married the love of his life, June Wyckoff, on Sept. 12, 1959, at the Hitching Post in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Together they raised their three children (Joe, Jeff and Melani) in Trout Creek. Throughout his life Glenn held many titles including bridge-builder, carpenter, logger, and outfitter. He also coached little league and served for many years on the Noxon School Board. An anchor of the community, he actively participated in activities and fundraisers for the Cabinet Ridge Riders and Clark Fork Bass Anglers. Most recently he took pride in building his dream home from the ground up, overlooking the Clark Fork Reservoir with plenty of room to entertain friends and family.
Always full of energy, Glenn constantly fished, hunted and recreated in the outdoors. If you couldn’t find him in the woods surrounding his hometown, he was traveling with his wife, June to warmer winter climates. Retired from his outfitting business, he never truly stopped working or playing. Glenn loved hunting so much that even after he retired he kept guiding anyone willing to go. He often shared his love of the outdoors with his close family and many friends, neither of which were ever in short supply. He was so easy-going and compassionate; people were simply drawn to him and his sense of adventure.
Grandkids were always a focal point in Glenn’s life. When they were all quite young he used to load them all up in his old suburban and drive them to Wal-Mart in Sandpoint, Idaho. Their Christmas present consisted of $20 to buy whatever their hearts desired, a trip to Pizza Hut for lunch and priceless memories. Taking his grandkids hunting and fishing brought Glenn so much joy. Often his excitement would far exceed whichever grandchild was lucky enough to accompany him on their adventures.
He was preceded in death by his parents Irene and Burt Miner and Clayton Smith. He is survived by his wife June Wyckoff Smith; twin sister Glenda Robinson; sons Joel (Roberta) Smith and Jeffery (Mary) Smith; daughter Melani Smith Carter; grandchildren Cortney (Jon) Vohs, Tabetha (Nicholas) Franssen, Cyndi (Nicholas) Tuttle, Sam (Erika) Carter, Stacy Smith, Preston (Misty) Smith, Bonnie (Michelle) Provencal, Meriah Carter, Timothy (Chrissy) Carter, Johnathan Carter, and Molly Carter; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
A celebration of Glenn’s life will be held at the Lakeside Resort in Trout Creek on Monday, Aug. 1, at 5:30 p.m. His final resting place will be in the mountains that he knew and loved.
