Gilbert L. Johnson, 96, of Missoula, passed away on Sunday, June 14, 2015, at the Village Health Care Rehabilitation Center of natural causes.
He was born on Dec. 28, 1918, in Hisperia, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Gunda Johnson. His life journey took him too many places here and abroad. He was a licensed radio operator in the Coast Guard and served during World War II in the South Pacific.
Gilbert's passions included his love of animals, short wave radio operations, world news and politics, history and all information technology. At 92 he moved to Clark Fork Riverside, Missoula, from Pennsylvania and loved his new life. During his last two years, Billy, a 10-year-old Chihuahua, became his constant companion. After a short illness he peacefully passed away with his dog Billy in his lap and his niece by his side.
He is survived by his niece, Janet Derrington.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be to the Humane Society of Montana in Missoula. A Memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 8 at Clark Fork Riverside, 301 W. Front St.
