Obituary for George J Shapanus

Having missed his first opportunity due to a prior commitment to the U.S. Air Force; George Joseph Shapanus Sr. was finally called up to “The Show” where he will catch the greatest big league pitchers of all time for eternity. He received the call at 1:55am at home on October 11th, and departed peacefully surrounded by family. He received an offer he couldn’t refuse, a contract that comes with a huge signing bonus, a permanent no-trade clause and a reunion with family and friends he has not seen in a long time. His new organization takes him to a wonderful place where he will be primarily playing, watching, or talking baseball (and sometimes football), to his heart’s content. George spent his entire career in the Roman Catholic League; regarded as one of the best
utility players ever seen, with plus plus scouting reports at the Altar Boy, Eucharistic Minister and Choir positions. If there were any remaining questions you weren’t able to ask him before he left; the answer is “No”

Originally drafted April 17th, 1932 in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania by Anthony and Pauline Shapanus, he played semi-pro for the United States Air Force from 1952-1956 and then for 4 years at Mount Saint Mary’s College, graduating in 1960 with a degree in Education. George married Katherine, in Great Falls in 1958, and retired to Missoula after spending 26 years at Hereford High School in Baltimore County Maryland.

George left behind the following devoted teammates: wife Katherine of Great Falls, sons George Jr., Winter Park, FL; Vincent (Julia), Salisbury, MD; Christopher, Laguna Hills, CA; Paul (Kendra), Towson, MD; and grandchildren Alexandra, and Zachary.

A Rosary Vigil is scheduled at 7:30pm on October 15th at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.
