Obituary for George Howard Hughes

George Howard Hughes, Jr passed away while sleeping peacefully on Monday, May 14, 2018, surrounded by family. He was born November 1, 1922 to George Howard and Pearl Wood Hughes in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Howard attended elementary school in Salt Lake. At the age of 15, he and his parents and a brother moved to Rexburg, Idaho to work on a farm. That was very hard work but he enjoyed it and learned to love to work.
In the spring of 1941, Howard graduated from Madison High School in Rexburg. That fall Howard enrolled at Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho.
Howard enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp, where he was in instructor in sheet metal repair on airplanes.
After the service he returned to Rexburg where he met Ladene Mortensen. They were married in the Idaho Falls Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on March 3, 1948.
After living in the Rexburg area Howard and Ladene and two children, Kent and Saundra, moved to Stevensville and later to Missoula.
Howard was employed in various construction jobs and later owned his own concrete septic tank business. He retired from working after being employed by the Missoula schools.
He was active in the LDS Church serving in many positions. The position he enjoyed the the most was Home teaching and being a bishop of a university ward.
Howard enjoyed being outdoors, hunting, fishing and watching grandchildren playing all kinds of sports.
Howard will be remembered by family and friends as fun loving and enjoying life. When asked how he is feeling he would reply, “I am doing pretty good for the shape I’m in.”
He is proceeded in death by his parents and a brother, and survived by his wife, Ladene; a son, Kent (Rhoda) of Sugar City, Idaho; a daughter, Saundra (Reed) Little of Polson, Montana, 13 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at 12:00 noon on Friday, May 18, 2018 at the LDS Church on Bancroft with a service at 1:00 p.m. followed by Internment at the Western Montana State Veterans Cemetery.
