Gene was born on March 17, 1922 in Michigan to Blanche and Harry Christianson. As a young girl, her mother divorced and married Royal A. Hall who adopted Gene and played an important role in her life. As a young woman she married Oscar C. Hauge, Jr., a marine aviator from Havre, Montana. Together with their three children, they lived an active military life stationed around the country. Oscar and Gene settled their family in Missoula, Montana in 1960.
After a 30-year marriage, they divorced and Gene married Dr. John Stewart. Her time with John included world travels, fishing, fun family times on Placid Lake, and beachside adventures in Mexico. Three golden retrievers and a cat with nearly as much longevity as Gene, brought joy to their lives. In recent years, Gene enjoyed winter fun and friends in Indio, California. John Stewart passed away in 2005.
Over 55 active years in Missoula, Gene was a member of the AT Chapter of PEO and Art Associates. She enjoyed playing bridge, attending University of Montana activities, and many other events with her wonderful Missoula friends. In mid life, she took up painting and spent many hours capturing Montana landscape and scenes of her extensive world travels. She enjoyed the companionship of Dr. John Madsen in recent years.
Gene is survived by her three children, Rodger Coleman (Jean) Hauge of Washougal, Washington; Ronald Oscar (Denise) Hauge of Yakima, Washington; and Karen Hauge Sykes of Denver, Colorado. Her grandchildren are Courtney (Colin) Flint, Kate (Andrew) Sundquist, Patrick (Eneida) Hauge, Anna (Mauricio) Leclerc, Jens Hauge (deceased), and Eric Wolcott. Her great-grandchildren are Douglas Flint, Jack Flint, Eli Sundquist, Olivea Wolcott, Olivia LeClerc, Claire Sundquist, Camile Leclerc and Jett Wolcott. She is also survived by Gayle (Jerry) McKeller, her stepdaughter and her children and grandchildren. Gene Stewart is remembered for her exuberance, her love of family and friends, her classy style, her great laugh, and her joyful spirit. She had a rich and fulfilling life and will be missed by all who knew her.
