Obituary for Fred Milton Hiatt

Fred Hiatt, 87, of Clinton, passed away Monday, Feb. 5, 2018, with his wife Barb by his side.

The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of 5 north at St. Pat's Hospital for your care, compassion and patience.

Fred was born Oct. 15, 1930, in Lincoln, Nebraska, to Miles and Margaret Hiatt. When Fred was four they moved to Western Montana, where he lived until his death.

In May 1951, Fred married Lena Geraldine (Dena) Coulson. They moved according to Fred’s work, taking along their 11 children. As long as they were together, that was their happy place. After 30 years together and many beautiful memories, Dena passed away on Nov. 8, 1981.

In March 1984, Fred married Barb S. Drake, and adding three more kids to the mix, now totaling 14. Fred and Barb lived their happiest as Caretakers of 320 acres at Placid Lake. In 2005, they moved to Clinton, where they took care of each other and shared the rest of their 34 years together.

Some people go their whole life without finding the love of their life, Fred was the luckiest man in the world and found that twice.

Fred worked hard all his life as a farmer, logger, heavy equipment operator, and retired as a diesel mechanic. Fred's strong work ethic is something he was most proud of, and often the subject of many stories. This trait is one he passed down through many generations.

He was a member of the Deer Creek Shooting Club, NRA, and International Union of Operating Engineers. Throughout his life he enjoyed telling stories, taking family trips, camping, hunting and fishing, which he loved to share with his big and forever-growing family. The trips to Lake Mary Ronan will forever hold a special place in all our hearts.

Fred was an amazing family man, with an amazingly huge heart. Son, brother, father, papa, great-grandfather, role model, hero and world's best husband. He could never be replaced and will forever be missed.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents; Miles and Margaret, wife; Dena, son; Ed, Sister; Alice, granddaughter; Dena, and grandsons; Shane, Aaron and Justyce.

Fred is survived by his loving wife Barb, his doggie Rebel, sisters Gladys, JoAnn and brother Cecil. Fred is survived by a large, loving family, too big to list, the following are his kids and their families.
