Obituary for Francis C. "Frank" Cyr

Missoula - Francis C. "Frank" Cyr, age 95, passed away on Monday, September 23, 2013 at Community Medical Center in Missoula. He was born on May 28, 1918 at the family homestead in the Frenchtown valley near Huson, Montana.
Frank was one of 15 children born to Huson pioneers John R. and Clara M. Cyr. He attended Frenchtown public schools and played on the Frenchtown basketball team throughout high school. His teammates called him "Frenchy", a name that stuck with him as an adult. He remained an avid fan and follower of the Frenchtown Broncs for more than four decades while he resided in Huson.
During the Great Depression he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) at Camp Menard in the Nine Mile Valley. He went to college in Denver and worked there and in the Minneapolis – St. Paul area during the 1940's returning to Huson in 1949 to help one of his sisters run the Huson Mercantile. He later bought and operated the store, post office and gas station until he retired in the mid 1970's. He was the Huson Postmaster for 26 years.
He married his first wife, Anne Vasecka of Frenchtown in 1951. They had one son, Kenneth C. Cyr. They divorced in 1967. Anne passed away in 2005.
In 1976 Frank married Margaret Gow of Florence. She passed away in 1999. Frank spent the past 37 years living on the family farm in the Bitterroot Valley.
Frank was a life long member of the Knights of Columbus and the Fraternal Order of Elks in Missoula. While in the Frenchtown valley he was a member of St. John's Catholic Church. While residing in the Bitterroot he attended St. Joseph Catholic Church in Florence. He shot in the Frenchtown Rifle Club for many years. Frank loved to fish and his favorite fishing spot was Lake Mary Ronan in the Flathead. Many summer weekends were spent there with family and friends.
After retirement Frank also enjoyed traveling and square dancing which he did into his 80's.
He is survived by two sisters, Jeanne Solem of Seattle, WA; and Julie Albert of Anaconda; his son Ken Cyr of Havre; four grandchildren, Lucas Cyr of Great Falls; Aspen Cyr of Missoula; Joshua Cyr of Denver CO and Alyssa Cyr-Jensen of Manhattan, KS; a step-granddaughter, Dawn Cannon of Missoula; and three great-grandchildren, Mason Cyr of Great Falls, Mackenzie Cyr – Hanson of Manhattan, KS and Daizy Mai Cyr of Denver, CO.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, September 30, 2013 at 1:00 P.M. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Florence with the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus present and with visitation from 12:00 noon until service time. Burial will follow services in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Garden City Funeral Home and Crematory.
