Howard Hufstetler, 85, died Saturday, June 20, 2015, in Missoula.
He was born Everett Howard Hufstetler in Ogden, Utah, on Jan. 15, 1930, the son of Everett Walter Hufstetler and May Hemmings. Howard graduated from Ogden High School in 1948, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Utah in 1962. He served in the United States Air Force from 1950 to 1953.
On July 28, 1951, Howard married Anna Mogensen in Ogden, and they enjoyed a wonderful life together for the next 56 years. They were the proud, devoted and loving parents of four children. Howard was an extraordinary caregiver for Anna during her final illness, before her death in early 2008.
Howard and Anna made their home in Ogden for most of their married life, but also enjoyed the years they spent in Rapid City, South Dakota; Challis, Idaho; Cedar City, Utah; and Kemmerer, Wyoming. They moved to Missoula in 1999 to be nearer to two of their children. Howard also loved to spend time at "the Ranch," the family's summer home near Flaming Gorge, Utah.
Both Howard and Anna loved to travel, and their journeys included visits to all 50 of the United States as well as destinations in Canada, Mexico and Europe. Their greatest joy, however, came from wandering the remote back roads of the American West, exploring ghost towns, historic sites and mountain forests. Among their many other interests were antiques, square dancing, rock hounding and archaeology.
Howard enjoyed a long professional career in administration and finance with Region 4 of the United States Forest Service. He retired from the Forest Service in 1986 and worked seasonally as an income tax preparer for several more years. In his later years, Howard was a faithful volunteer at the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Howard is survived by three of his children, Mark Hufstetler of Bozeman, Mike Hufstetler and his wife Lisa of San Antonio, and Kathleen Jenks and her husband Jack of Missoula. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Tom and Stan; his wife, Anna; and his son, Paul. Howard is also survived by his dog Bella, the last in a long line of canine companions who shared and enriched his life over the decades.
In accordance with Howard's wishes, no memorial services are planned. Interment of ashes will take place at Aultorest Memorial Park in Ogden at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society of Western Montana or the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula.
