DEER LODGE - Everett Gaines Burt, 84, of Deer Lodge, died Sunday, November. 30, 2008, of natural causes at St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula.
Everett was born in Spokane January. 22, 1924, to Earl and Alta Burt. Everett was raised in the Deer Lodge area with his parents and three brothers. Upon graduation from Powell County High School in 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he became an aviation engineer working on F6F Navy aircraft on the carrier USS Bataan, in the South Pacific during World War II.
After the war, Everett returned to Montana, working many jobs, including time with the Forest Service and as a mechanic. In 1958, he was elected sheriff of Powell County, where he served until 1970. During his tenure as sheriff, he was responsible for organizing the Powell County Search and Rescue Patrol. Everett worked as a conductor for the Milwaukee Railroad, retired as the manager of the Super 8 Motel in Deer Lodge, and was active in the Deer Lodge Snowmobile Club for many years, riding for the final time last winter.
On October. 12, 1957, Everett married Barbara Ann Mahoney of Anderson, S.C., in Deer Lodge and the couple had four children, Bill, Dan, Tom and Bonnie. The couple spent their entire married life in Deer Lodge happily raising their family, and last fall celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Everett was a devoted father and husband, who will be missed and appreciated, especially by the vanishing generation of those who lived through the Great Depression and fought in World War II. His many stories, recollection and old photographs of days gone by will always be remembered.
Everett was preceded in death by his son Bill on April 19, 2002; and his wife Barbara on November. 10, 2008.
Survivors include sons Dan Burt of Deer Lodge and Tom Burt of Missoula; daughter Bonnie Burt of Los Angeles; and grandsons Jonathan Burt of Puyallup, Wash. and Billy Burt of Deer Lodge.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, December. 5, at St. James Episcopal Church in Deer Lodge. Memorials may be sent to St. James Episcopal Church.
Cremation and Burial Society of the Rockies has assisted the family with arrangements.
