Evelyn Catherine Hawkins, 86, of Missoula passed away on Saturday, March 29, 2014 under Rocky Mountain Hospice Care at Bee Hive Homes of natural causes.
She was born January 22, 1928 in Honolulu, Hawaii to parents C.R. and Mary Gates. Evelyn grew up on the island of Oahu where she survived the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Her to be husband Kenneth also survived the attack working at the USR ammunition depot, north end of Oahu. They married January 27, 1944 in Waipahu, Hawaii.
Evelyn moved to Missoula in 1959. She was a homemaker, active in St. Anthony's Alter Society, 4 Corners Extension Homemakers, Hellgate Knight Booster Club, a noon duty aid at Franklin Grade School, and a volunteer coordinator at Radio Reading Service. Evelyn was awarded the homemaker of the year award in 1994 and June Hubrecht award for outstanding service to the Radio Reading Service in 1998.
She was a loving wife, adored mother, grandmother and great grandmother who leaves us with fond memories.
Preceding her in death are her parents, two sisters and husband of 39 years. She is survived by her six children, Phylis Stenslie of Missoula; Fred (Sherry) of Las Vega, NV; Brenda (Gary) Staudinger of Mesa, AZ; Thomas (LeeAnn) of MIsosula; Rita May (Micah) of Kirkland WA; Beverly (John) Hawkins-Llewellyn of Frenchtown; 14 Grandchildren, and 21 great grandchildren.
At her request, private family services will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Evelyn's memory to Missoula Aging Services or Meals On Wheels.
