Elmer H. Dickhaut, 86, of Missoula, passed away on Monday, Nov. 16, 2015, at his daughter's home in Missoula of natural causes.
Elmer was born in Mott, North Dakota, on Oct. 13, 1929, to Henry and Amelia Dickhaut. As a young boy he only attended school until age 13 so he could help work on the family farm.
On Oct. 18, 1949, he married Eugina (Jean) Ott in Grand Forks, North Dakota. In 1951 they moved to Stevensville. In 1952 they moved to Missoula where they called home raising their six children. Dad worked as a mechanic in Missoula owning his own business until he retired in 1987. During his retirement he started woodworking, making birdhouses, planters and whatever else someone wanted.
Elmer and Jean enjoyed spending a few winters in Arizona with family and friends.
His children and grandchildren were the love of his life. As a loving father he took great pride and loving care of his family. He loved gardening, growing flowers and keeping a pristine yard. His garage was full of birdhouses that he made. He was happiest sitting outside in the summer watching and feeding his birds.
Elmer was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years; mother and father; brother Leonard and sister Emma. He is survived by his children, Wayne (Yun) of Spokane, Gary (Theresa) of Billings, Janice (Mark) Buck of Missoula, Sharon (Roy) Hall of Billings, Mark (Tonette) of Billings, Dennis (Barb) of Missoula; seven grandkids, nine great-grandkids and one due in February; sisters, Lydia Kallis, Florence Zentner and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Saturday, Nov. 21, at 2 p.m. Service following at 3 p.m. at Garden City Funeral Home with Gregory Grallo officiating. There will be a private burial at a later date.
