Ellen Stubblefield was born on August 30, 1922 in Helena, Montana. Her parents were Alma and James J. Mayne. She was a fourth generation Montanan. Her great grandmother, Mary Cox and Grandmother Matilda Mayne were pioneers of Montana. Her father, James Mayne was born at Canyon Ferry, MT.
Ellen attended Central Grade School and Helena High School, graduating in 1940. The first year and one half in high school was held in the railroad coaches used as a school following the earthquakes in Helena in 1935.
On May 1, 1941, she married Glen T. Stubblefield. She is survived by two sons, Steven Stubblefield and Gary Stubblefield and his wife Connie. She has two granddaughters, four grandsons, numerous great grandchildren, and two nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen Stubblefield, her parents, and sister Janette.
She was a charter member of the Helena Honor Society, the Order of Rainbow Girls, received the Cross of colors, and Theda Row Girls, all of Helena.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Missoula, Montana. She was also a past member of the Methodist Churches in Anaconda, Helena, and Mesa AZ before moving to Missoula. Ellen was a long time member of the Sons and Daughters of Montana Pioneers. She was also a member of PEO Chapter BE in Missoula.
Ellen served as a secretary in several businesses. She served as an officer in many capacities of Women's Organizations in the various churches. While living in Anaconda, she was a member of the Women's Club, Home Extension Club, Parent Teachers group, Square Dancing Group, and the Anaconda Ski Club. She also belonged to various bridge groups. She often volunteered in many capacities in the community.
She was a home maker, and enjoyed sewing, knitting, and crocheting. An enthusiastic adventurer, she was actively involved with the family in snow skiing, water skiing, boating, camping, hiking, and hunting to include once killing a moose. She traveled extensively to include South Korea, and many months each winter throughout Mexico and the Florida Keys in their RV. A special note, she learned to SCUBA dive at the age of 65 and traveled to Dominica in the Caribbean to enjoy a special dive adventure.
Services will be held at 4PM at the First United Methodist Church of Missoula, located at 300 E. Main Street, Missoula, MT on Wednesday February 4, 2015. Donations can be made to a local Salvation Army or Hospice in Ellen's name.
