Obituary for Duane Garfield

Duane Garfield, 61, of Missoula went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2013, shortly after discovering that his cancer had spread.

He was born on Oct. 20, 1951, in Glendive to Grace Purvis and Richard Garfield. He lived in Montana his whole life with the exception of the time he served in the U.S. Navy where he resided on the USS Paul Revere. Duane was a mill worker by trade. He worked at the mill in Bonner for about 30 years until it closed its doors.

Duane's life was his family. He married his soul mate Julie on April 22, 1972, and never liked to be far from her. He loved spending time with his family. He could always be found chasing a kiddo or checking out the animals. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle with his family and friends, scuba diving at McGregor Lake and supporting his grandson Trevor with his Outlaw Karts. Duane was always willing to help any person that ever asked for him help. He had a huge heart and we will miss him every day that he is not with us.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Patrick Briggs.

He is survived by his wife, Julie and their children, Leah (James Garrison) and Matthew. He was blessed with four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Shyla (Trinity and Izak), Trevor, Joshua and Emmett. He is also survived by his siblings, Leona Jobe, Kenny (Diane) Garfield, Linda England, Sharon Briggs, Dorothy (Chris) Grooms and Michael (Dawn) Briggs. He was cherished by many special nieces, nephews and extended family.

If you have any picture or memories of Duane that you would like to share with our family please email them to drgarfield18@gmail.com or bring them to the celebration. We would like to compile a memory album.

We will be having a celebration of Duane's life on Saturday, Oct. 12, at 1 p.m. at the Dark Horse (the old Buck's Club) in Missoula. Please bring a potluck dish to share.

In lieu of flowers please make donations to your local hospice.
