Douglas M. “Doug” White, left his sickly body on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2016. Doug was born on Feb. 1, 1948, in St. Ignatius, to his parents Inez and Robert White. After spending his early years in White Sulphur Springs, the family moved to Pablo to live with their grandparents.
Seven days after high school graduation, Doug was drafted into the U.S. Army serving from 1967-1971, spending his time in Germany and Vietnam. After being discharged, he worked at the saw mill in Philipsburg, then moved to East Missoula while working at Van Evans. After they closed, he began working at Stone Container and continued until his retirement due to health issues.
Doug loved to hunt and fish. He participated in many Mack Days fishing tournaments, winning and placing in many. He loved Flathead Lake and spent as much time as possible there. He was a very successful hunter, harvesting 50 elk in a row without a miss. Health issues prevented him from continuing.
Doug loved old cars and his prized possession’s were his 1981 Mercedes Benz, 1936 Plymouth, and recently completed 1959 Chevy Biscayne. Doug was a member of the Hellgate Chapter Montana Pioneers and Classic Auto Club. He also enjoying spending time at various car shows where he won several trophies, but also just loved visiting with car people.
Doug is survived by his beloved partner and longtime friend, Shirlee Champ and their dog, Belle of Missoula; stepdaughter, Heather (Rick) Bronwell of Minnesota; stepson, Mike (Lindsay) Champ of Missoula, and the loves of his life Ashleigh and Addison Bronwell of Minnesota, who always called him Grandpa Boom; step sister-in-law, Shellee of Alaska; sister Marsha of Idaho; his estranged daughter Karen of North Carolina, and many cousins, nieces, nephews and a great bunch of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Bobbie Jo and Linda; and brothers, Dale and Duane.
A memorial service will be held at Garden City Funeral Home on Wednesday, Aug. 24, at 2 p.m. A potluck reception will immediately follow in the funeral homes reception room.
A private burial will take place at a later date in Ronan.
