Dorothy "May" Nelson
Dorothy May Nelson, 86, of Philipsburg, passed away August 15, 2023 at the St. Patrick Hospital of natural
causes.
She was born on March 30, 1937, in Missoula to Lawrence and Pearl Shaubut. As a young girl she lived
with her family in the Bonita area. She had many great adventures there with her sister and dear friends.
She loved to dance and that was where she met the love of her life. Clifford" Swede" Nelson swept her
off her feet when they met at the fireman's ball in Drummond.
On February 25, 1956 they became husband and wife. They lived in Drummond for 33 years. May was
the driving force on their ranch. You could find her irrigating, moving cattle, putting up hay, and always in
the barns for calving season. She also made sure everyone was well fed. May loved to cook. If you came to her home you pretty much knew you were going to get fed a wonderful meal, even if she didn't know you were coming she would whip something up for you. Her pies will be truly missed.
May was a 4-H leader for many years. She was on a women's bowling team while living in Drummond
May loved the outdoors. She snowmobiled, went 4 wheeling, horseback riding, and hiked all over the
mountains in the Princeton area. She was also a self taught carver. Her wood carvings were sought after
by everyone. All of the families Christmas trees are decorated with her ornaments.
In 1990 They moved to their cabin up at Princeton. May turned the rather large yard into a huge flower
garden. She loved gardening. She had so many flowers that there is always something blooming
throughout the summer.
Her other love was her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed her time with them and was
always happy that they lived close by.
Her last great adventure was a ride in life flight from Deerlodge to Missoula. She said that if she had
known it was going to be that much fun she would have done it a long time ago.
The last thing she asked of all of us. Was to be kind to each other and to all animals.
