Obituary for Donald Leroy Delaney

– Donald Leroy Delaney, 78, died Sunday, April 12, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family. Don was born in Martin, South Dakota, on July 18, 1936, to Ella and Paul Delaney.

Don married Shirley, the love of his life, in 1959. He was the father to Michael and Timothy Delaney. Don and Shirley had three grandchildren whom they loved very much, Scott, Alicia and Ryan. Don was and always will be the best "Poppy" any grandchild could ever ask for.

The Delaney family moved to St. lgnatius in 1946. They then moved on to Missoula in 1949 where the family was involved in the lumber business. In 1952 their father, Paul, died at the age of 52. Don, Bob and their mother, Ella, went on to expand their sawmill business to five lumber mills producing approximately 100 million feet per year. Before selling and bringing Champion International to Montana. they were also partners in the second largest wholesale lumber company in the U.S.

The Delaneys were the original founding family of Southgate Mall and were the second largest owner behind the L.A. Hamilton family. The family was active in the mall development until after the completion of the second half at which time they sold their interest.

At that time, the Delaney family turned their interest to the mining business and is still actively involved. Don and Bob felt very blessed to actively work with their mother, Ella, until her passing at the age of 95.

Don was an active supporter of the University of Montana Grizzlies. Game days were at the top of his list and he never missed a game no matter what was on his agenda.

Don was very proud to be an active member of the Missoula Elks Club and was privileged to be the Exalted Ruler during his tenure with the Elks. Another proud accomplishment for Don was serving on the State of Montana Water Board. He also served on the board of directors for Timber Products Manufacturers Association and the State of Montana Forestry Board.

Don is survived by his son, Michael T. Delaney, of Polson; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Scott, Deb, Timothy and Gregory Ghan of Silt, Colorado, Alicia, David, Payton and Trey Blackwell, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Ryan, Gabby, Chase and Ethan Ghan of Laveen, Arizona. Don is also survived by his beloved brother who never left his side, Robert Delaney, of Missoula and forever friends, Patta and Marvin Kahler.

Don was preceded in death by his wife Shirley; son Timothy; his parents Paul and Ella Delaney and his beloved dogs, Chrissy, Polly and Kasey.

The family would like to thank Missoula Hospice and especially Chris for his compassion and kindness. We also want to thank Wayne, Rick and Tyson at Garden City Funeral Home. We appreciate all of you for everything you have done for our family during this sad time.

Cremation has taken place and a private family service will held at a later date.

Don was honored to have so many wonderful people he could call his friends. The family wishes you all a sincere thank you.

The Clock of Life

by Ralph Waddell

The clock of life is wound but once and no one has the power to tell just when the hands will stop at late or early hour. Now is the time you own, live, love and toil with a will. Place no faith in tomorrow for the hands of time may then be still.
