Dean Bennett, 82, of Ovando, passed away on Sunday, August 16, 2015 at St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula.
Born on September 25, 1932, in Hettinger, North Dakota, to Palmer and Alys Ode, Dean was brought to Montana at the age of five where his family was forced to move about frequently due to the nature of his father's work. Having first lived in Clinton and then in Missoula, he started school in Helena. When his mother divorced and remarried, his stepfather, Denzel Bennett, moved the family permanently to Anaconda, where Dean grew to adulthood and graduated from Anaconda High.
After completing a carpenter's apprenticeship with Theodore Eck, Dean fulfilled his military service by joining the Mountain and Cold Weather Training Command based at Camp Hale in Colorado. In the next two years he became so expert a skier that the Army sent him to New Hampshire to train with the cross-country racing team it planned to send to the Olympics. Upon leaving the service, Dean finished his education at MSU in Bozeman, earning a degree in Architectural Engineering and marrying his fellow design student, Angela Gibney, in 1962.
Graduating together, the couple moved to Seattle where Dean both practiced as an architect and became his own developer. A first daughter, Lisa, born in 1963, was followed by Kerry, born in 1967. Retiring in 1995, Dean fulfilled a lifelong dream by buying and moving to the Ovando area ranch where his family continues to live
Survivors include his wife, Angela, of Ovando, his daughter Kerry and her family, of Seeley Lake, his sister Delores Harris, of Anaconda, and her family and his sister-in-law Diane Bennett of Ovando..
