David Perry Lowery Sr., 92, of Missoula, died at home Tuesday, March 4, 2014 of cancer.
He is survived by Martha, his wife of 55 years; two sons, David Jr. and Matthew; daughter Ann; daughters-in-law Susan, Katie and Allison; grandchildren Abigail, Bridger and Henry; and step-grandchildren Stephanie, Anthony and Angela. He is also survived by five siblings, Geraldine, Genevieve, James, Robert and Rebecca.
He was preceded in death by his parents, David Perry Fitzsimmons Lowery and Esther Agnes Dean; brothers John (killed in action at Iwo Jima, 1945), Charles and Dean; and sisters Anna and Lois.
David was born Nov. 1, 1921, in Washington, Pa. He attended the University of Akron (B.S.), Michigan State University (B.S.), Duke University (M.S.) and earned his doctorate from the University of Montana.
He served in the United States Air Force during World War II as a belly turret gunner in a B-17. He was interned in Sweden during the war after his plane was damaged during a raid over Berlin and landed in Sweden.
After David and Martha married in Wisconsin in 1958, they moved to Missoula. He worked for the U.S. Forest Service in Missoula for 35 years.
He served as a Peace Corps volunteer for four terms: twice in Chile, the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica. David loved to travel and read and enjoyed playing bridge at the Missoula Senior Center. He was a regular blood donor and volunteer at the Missoula Public Library and the Food Bank. He will be remembered as a scientist, volunteer, teacher, traveler and adventurer, philanthropist and loving father and grandfather.
No services are planned in accordance with David's wishes.
