Obituary for David Spencer Floyd

David Spencer Floyd, 62, of Missoula, passed away on Tuesday, May 3, 2016, at his home surrounded by his wife and children, after a three year battle with melanoma.

He was born Sept. 7, 1953, in Glasgow, to Gilbert Ross Floyd and Velma Goldfinch. Until the age of four David grew up on the family farm in Ophiem, when Ross moved the family to Great Falls. Ross and Velma later divorced and Velma married Floyd Garber. The family lived in various towns across Montana over the years, but Dave always considered Lewistown his home.

On June 14, 1975, Dave married the love of his life, Peggy Jean Sewell, in Cut Bank, and Dave took a job with Conoco Inc., in that town shortly thereafter. The couple welcomed their first son, Nickolas David, on July 15, 1978. After their daughter, Jenae Michelle, came into the world on Oct. 21, 1980, Conoco moved the Floyds to Burley, Idaho. The company moved them again to Rock Springs, Wyoming, in 1985, where their second son, Jacob Russell was born on Oct. 9 that same year. In 1998, they moved to Billings, and then to Missoula in 2000, where they found their "happy place."

Dave was an avid outdoorsman, a Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation member, a rabid Griz football fan, and could be found at every home game tailgating at the "Grizmobile" and even traveled to some away games.

A loving husband, father and grandfather, he also had many great friends who he and Peggy invited into their home for Griz parties or just to lend a place to stay. A very hard and loyal worker, Dave loved Montana, hunting, fishing, camping with his family and music that really spoke to him.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Velma Garber; stepfather Floyd Garber; father Gilbert Ross Floyd; sister Suzan Floyd and brother, Gary Floyd.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy of Missoula; daughter Jenae Floyd of Missoula; sons, Nick (Kelly) Floyd of Peoria, Illinois, and Jake Floyd of Missoula; six grandchildren, Michelle, Devin, Harlynn, and Gabe Floyd and Emeka and Aniston Onuogu; sisters, Neva (Tim) Pool of Missoula and Verna (Jim) VanHaur and brother Larry (LeeAnn) Garber, both of Lewistown; stepmother Phyllis Floyd of Great Falls; 16 nieces and nephews and 23 great-nieces and nephews.

Memorial service will be held Tuesday, May 10, at 11 a.m. at Garden City Funeral Home with a luncheon to follow. Attendees are encouraged to wear their Grizwear. The family farm is calling Dave home. He will be buried at the family plot in Ophiem at a later date.
