Dale Bond, of Missoula (formerly of Brockway), passed into eternal life on Sunday, Jan. 29, 2017, at the age of 82.
Dale was born on March 28, 1934, in Circle, Montana, to Verl and Agnes Bond. Dale was the fourth child of five, and due to the severe economic times of the Great Depression, Dale’s three older sisters were sent away to live with other families. Dale and his brother, Gary, grew up in Brockway until their parents died, leaving the two boys orphaned. LaVerne and Virginia Logan took the boys in and raised them as part of their family. Dale considered LaVerne and Virginia and their children to be his adopted family.
After graduation from Circle High School in 1952, Dale enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War from 1953 to 1955. He then returned to Brockway to work at Brockway Hardware. On June 1, 1958, Dale married Ruth Spears in Miles City, Montana. In September 1962, he became the Brockway Postmaster, and in January 1964, they purchased the Brockway Store, creating Bond’s Cash Market and D&D Appliance. In 2000, Dale retired as the Circle Postmaster after a 40-year career with the U.S. Postal Service. In 2004, Dale and Ruth moved to Missoula to enjoy retirement and be closer to family.
Dale served his hometown in many capacities and was considered by many to be the unofficial mayor of Brockway. In addition to being on the cemetery board, he was the Brockway school clerk for more than 30 years. He also served for more than 30 years on the Brockway Commercial Club, which organized and ran the legendary Brockway Dairy Day Rodeo. Dale was very proud of his military service and was actively involved in the local VFW chapter. He was subsequently elected as Montana State Commander in 1976 and was also involved on the national level. In his spare time, he loved woodworking and will be remembered for the many postal piggy banks that he created.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Ruth, and was the loving father of Debbie (Les) Wagner, Mukwonago, Wisconsin, Dorrie (Greg) Beach, and Doug (Twyla) Bond, Missoula. Dale was the proud grandpa to Holly and Kalli Wagner, Megan, Emily, and David Beach, Ally (Gerrad Gleinig) and Logan Bond, and was great-grandpa to Bridger Bond Gleinig. He is also survived by his brothers, LaVaine (Arlene) Logan, Lee Logan, and his sister Lorraine (Sis) (Milt) Koppenhoefer. Dale was preceded in death by his parents, both the Bond’s and the Logan’s, sisters, LaVonne, Shirley and Marie, and brother Gary and sister-in-law Edda.
Condolences and remembrances may be shared with the family on the Garden City Funeral Home website: gardencityfh.com.
The family wishes to thank his doctors as well as his wonderful health care providers; both Riverside Health Care and St. Patrick’s Hospital. A celebration of Dale’s life and graveside services will be held at a later date in Brockway.
