You probably saw Mom and her son Carl on their bright red scooters, with their American flags
waving, riding all over Missoula. Before their scooters they had walked all over town including to
Walmart on Hwy 93 and back to their home in the Rattlesnake. They also loved to walk through
Greenough Park. When Mom decided to give up driving, they would ride the Mountain Line deciding
which bus they could take so they could go everywhere. They knew every bus driver by name and
almost every waitress in town.
Mom was born April 9, 1921 in Searcy, Arkansas, the daughter of John Edward Dodd and Minnie Haha
Fisher. She had 2 brothers: Arthur and Virgle, and 2 sisters: Sue and LiddyMae; all who have preceded
her in death. She passed away on Sunday, June 1, 2014.
Mom and her mom came to Montana in December of 1935 because Mom had contracted tuberculosis.
She told us that they picked vegetables in Arkansas before they left and when they got to Montana it
was 40 below zero. She was in total shock. Mom was a true believer in Jesus Christ. She had studied
the Bible and many other religions, and attended many many churches, including the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was especially fond of Bishop Brown who come to visit her and Carl
at home. We are grateful to him for his council.
Mom loved her kids more than life, she was always there for us, whether boy scouts, campfire girls, or
taking us to church. She studied to be an LPN, she volunteered at just about anything you could think
of. She was a Hospice companion for many years giving up only because it became too hard to lose
her "friends". She was truly an amazing, beautiful woman and we miss her dearly.
Mom was blessed with 6 children. She had five sons: William (Carol) Grubbs, Henry (Kathleen)
Bartlett, Carl E. Grubbs, George E. Bartlett, and Dennis (Diane) Bartlett and one daughter Janette
(Roger) Smith. She had numerous grand-children, great-grand-children, and great-great-grand-
children. She had a 5 generation picture taken on her 92th birthday. She was preceded in death by her
parents and siblings, her husband George L. Bartlett, her first born grandson Duke A. Grubbs and a
great-granddaughter Hailey Nichole Smith.
Our brother and Mom's son Carl, though mentally challenged, was Mom's companion for over 30
years and he cared for her with undying devotion. She had been his rock for many years and he was
hers during her final years. They just loved to travel going to Alaska, Panama Canal, or gambling in
Jackpot.
Per Mom's request no services will be held. Mom's ashes and our father's will be combined and taken
to one of their favorite camping spots and will be scattered, per their wishes, by her six children.
Memorials may be made in her name for a trust set up for her son Carl E. Grubbs in the care of George
E. Bartlett at Missoula Federal Credit Union, 126 W. Spruce St. Missoula, MT 59802 Sunset Memorial is assisting with arrangements.
WE LOVE YOU MOM!
