Cassandra Marie "Cassie" Black, 49, passed away suddenly Thursday night, Aug. 8, 2013, at her home in Missoula.
Cassie was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on Jan. 22, 1964, to Bryan and Margaret Black. In 1965, as a young child she immigrated with her parents to southern Ontario, Canada, and later to Missoula, where her father accepted an appointment at the University of Montana. Cassie's early childhood in Scotland included training her three doting grandparents to dutifully spoil her. Her childhood in Missoula included a series of much-loved pets, music in high school, where she loved to play the bass, and two younger siblings. She was in the Job Corps program. She enjoyed growing roses and vegetables at her home until her health declined, but she continued to have treasured pets. She loved music and cooking and worked at several restaurants and lastly at the University of Montana until she became disabled. She was proud to become a U.S. citizen on July 17, 2008.
She is survived by her gentle companion for 13 years, husband Vern Leggett; her parents, Margaret Teague (Chuck) of Missoula and Bryan Black (Sandra Bolles) of Clinton; a sister, Rhea Black, and a brother, Graham Black (Kasey), both of Missoula; four nieces and nephews, Payton and Cameron Fuller and Henry and Hazel Black; numerous relatives in Scotland; and her favorite dog "Cookie." Her family and friends remember her kindness and good heart.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate her life at 6 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 19, at Pineview Park, on Pineview Drive off Rattlesnake Drive. Memorials can be given to the Missoula YWCA Children's Programs, 1130 W. Broadway, Missoula, MT 59802.
