Carol Coats passed away peacefully in her home on Friday, June 9, 2017.
Carol was born in Kalispell to Harry and Hazel Hoiland on June 16, 1927. After graduating from high school in 1944, she lived in Seattle where she attended the University of Washington for one year.
In 1946, Carol moved to Missoula and took a job with radio station KGVO. She met and married John "Bud" H. Coats. Their first daughter Kathy was born in Missoula in 1947.
Carol and Bud moved to Kalispell where their son Larry was born in 1948. After a short time in Kalispell, they lived in San Diego for 18 months where Bud attended school. Bud accepted work with the U.S. Forest Service, and they lived in Grangeville, Idaho, for three years and then in Coeur d'Alene, for three years. Daughters Ruth and Lois were born in Coeur d'Alene.
In 1956, Carol and Bud moved to Missoula, where they remained the rest of their lives. Bud continued working for the Forest Service as Communications Chief until he retired. Carol was a full-time homemaker until 1966, when she enrolled at the University of Montana and obtained her bachelor's and master's degrees in psychology. She then worked as a school psychologist in Missoula School District #1 until she retired.
Carol's daughters Lois, Kathy and Ruth all predeceased her. Carol is survived by her son Larry, grandchildren Eric Hanson, Jeff Hanson, Laurie Bennett, Jason Waling, Cara Kryszko and Lara Wheeler, and by 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
At her request, no services are planned. Carol requested that no flowers be sent and no donations be made in her name. Carol's family would like to extend thanks to Hospice of Missoula for all their help.
