Carl Maurice Styger, 93, of Missoula, passed away peacefully Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, of natural causes.
He was born June 4, 1920, to Maurice and Elizabeth (Brazel) Styger at the Ballantine family farm. Carl was educated at Ballantine Elementary and Huntley Project High in Worden, graduating in 1938.
He left the farm for the Armed Forces in 1942 and was discharged Dec. 24, 1945.
On Dec. 10, 1943, he married Verdonne (Donnie Cooley from Mesa, Ariz.) and returned to Montana in 1946.
He worked on the farm until 1948. From 1948 to 1969, he was employed with International Harvester in Billings and from 1969-1986 with the Hesston Corporation in Bakersfield, Calif.
In the spring of 1985 as a result of a Hesston campaign, he and Donnie took a trip of a lifetime to Europe – staying three nights each in London, Paris and Venice. From Venice they took a train to Schwyz, Switzerland, the birthplace of his father and siblings.
He retired in 1986, spending winters in Bakersfield and summers in Lolo, where his son Stan lived. During this time he enjoyed traveling and visiting family and friends.
He had a passion for golfing and had a hole in one three times. He tossed horseshoes and won trophies. He was very social (cards games and dinners) with countless family and friends with whom he kept in close contact. He kept hundreds of photos and documents.
Until the day he passed, family and friends came from far and near to visit and call. It gave him great joy! Thank you!
Devoted and loving son Stan took great care of him every day since September 2010.
Carl is survived by his son Stan Styger of Missoula; son Alan (Linda) Styger of Hot Springs, S.D., and his family; daughter Sandra (Sandy Styger) Wills of Missoula and her family; brother Maurice (Sarah Schneidmiller) Styger of Billings and his family; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Per Carl's wishes, he will be cremated and interred at Pleasantview Cemetery, Ballantine, in the Styger family plots at a later date.
Arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Cremation and Burial Society of the Rockies. Condolences and memories can be shared at www.missoulafuneralhomes.com.
He wrote a farewell letter that will be sent.
