Obituary for Calvin Murphy (Cal)

Our loving Father, Calvin (Cal) Murphy passed away peacefully at the Light House Assisted Living Center in Missoula, Mt. on July 25th.

Cal was born in Richland, WA on December 17, 1923 and was the youngest of four children born to Joe and Emma Murphy. When Cal was 4 years old his family moved to Rudyard, MT making Montana his home for the remainder of his life. He began working and helping his family at a young age by delivering milk from their small dairy at five years of age and would wake up early to complete farm chores before heading off to school. Cal enjoyed playing basketball, running track and would spend hours practicing at the high school; he was always proud to be raised and attend school in a small community.

Upon graduation from Rudyard High, Cal attended Montana State University in Missoula in 1942 and was called into the army for a short stint in 1945. He then returned to Missoula and graduated with a degree in accounting and after graduation he began working in the Business Office for $100.00 a month. It was there he met Donna Reynolds and they were married in 1959. He thoroughly enjoyed his time at the University and for the next 34 years he rose to position of Vice President of Fiscal Affairs and Business Manager for Auxiliary Services. The University budget went from $8M to over $40M under his direction. Upon his retirement on 1983 the University established the Calvin Murphy Scholarship fund to assist deserving out of state students attend school in Missoula. Cal began a second career as President and CEO of the Missoula Federal Credit Union growing the institution from one office and $5M to four offices and over $31M in assets. Additionally, he combined three local Credit Unions into the Missoula Federal Credit Union. He retired for a second time in 1992.

Cal truly enjoyed serving and volunteering at the Immanuel Lutheran Church where he served in numerous positions. He loved bowling, square dancing and spending time with his family at the beloved Murphy cabin on Flathead Lake. Some of his favorite memories were working on the cabin, playing cribbage on the deck, fishing and boating on Flathead Lake.

Cal is survived by his wife Donna and their five children, Suzanne (Anthony) Perez, Michael (Bonnie), David (Sharon), Chris (Tamera) Ken (Kris), ten grandchildren and seven great grand children.
Cal will be remembered as a man of integrity, honesty, values reflecting the greatest generation and a wonderful and devoted husband, father, brother and friend.

A "Celebration of Life" will be held on August 31st at 11:00am at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 830 South Ave. in Missoula.
