Obituary for Betty Sue Hofman

Betty Sue Hofman, 77, of Missoula, passed away on Friday, September 19, 2014 at The Springs of natural causes after a brief illness.

She was born on October 9, 1936 in Denver, Colorado to Bernice Louise Bass and Clark W. Brown where she was youngest of five daughters. She was raised in Burien, Washington and went the Highline High School in Burien where she graduated with honors. She went on to graduate from the University of Montana as Valedictorian with a BS in Education. She taught at the high school level first as a student teacher in Charlo, MT then Cheney, Washington where she met her husband Tymen "Tim" Hofman. Betty and Tim were married on June 23, 1962 and moved to Twisp, Washington after a honeymoon in Birch Bay, Washington which they continued to visit annually for crabbing, clamming and fishing. Betty was very talented in art and music with a passion for watercolor, pastels and pencil art as well as played the flute and had a beautiful voice.

Blessed with four daughters in six years, Betty became a full time homemaker and mother. Tim and Betty moved with Tim's USFS Engineering job from Twisp, WA to Corvallis, Oregon then Lebanon, Oregon and in 1976 to the Nine Mile Valley, west of Missoula, MT. Betty and Tim enjoyed gardening, raising bees, and raising their family of four girls. Betty also enjoyed being a long distance step mother to Ken and Diana Hofman and loved them like her own.

Being a grandmother and great grandmother was a real joy for Betty. She especially enjoyed Sara (Hecht) , Harry (Ward), Kelsey (Ward), Conner (Petersen), Grace (Petersen) , Blade (Sorenson), Brodie (Sorenson) and great granddaughter Michaela (Hecht).

Betty is survived by her daughters and their spouses, Susan Sorenson, Katie Ward (Jim Swanson), Nancy Hetrick (Tom Hetrick) and Sally Hensel (David Hensel), her step son, Ken Hofman (Nina Hofman) and Diana Hofman (and her son Ryan Hofman) and her grandchildren named above; her sister and her husband, Dorothy Botts ((Howard)(Black Diamond, WA)).

In 2002, Betty moved into the The Springs Living retirement community in Missoula after the passing of her husband, Tim and loved every minute of her last eight years. She especially loved the management and staff who worked closely with her as "food chairman".

Betty will be remembered by her glowing spirit of kindness, love and integrity.

A celebration of Betty's life will be at The Springs, 3510 American Way in Missoula, MT at
1:30 pm, Friday, September 26, 2014. Sunset Memorial Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements. Condolences for the family may be left at www.missoulafuneralhomes.com
