Reading books and watching movies added greatly to her of life, as did walking, golf, skiing and swimming. She graduated from St. Francis Xavier Elementary School and Missoula County High School, and attended the University of Montana for two years.
In July 1941, she married Joseph S. Root Jr., who was killed over Berlin while flying with the 754th Bombardment Squadron on March 4, 1944. In September 1949, she married Charles French Kellogg in Missoula at St. Francis Xavier Church. They had five children – Colleen, Juliette, Mary Gen, Patrick and Michael. French died Jan. 30, 1994, and Patrick on Aug. 23, 1997.
Colleen Beers lives with her husband Ed in Florence, Julie Madler lives with her husband Steve in Folsom, California, and Mary Gen Lawrenson lives with her husband Mike in Denver. Mike Kellogg lives in San Jose, California. All of her children visited her this summer.
Bernice retired as librarian for St. Joseph Elementary after working there for 30 years.
In addition to her kids, Bernice is survived by her sister, Gen Worden, who has lived with her since French's death; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was a lifelong member of St. Francis Xavier Church, where she was baptized, confirmed and married, and was a member of the St. Ann Society and Daughters of Isabella. Reading scripture at St. Francis Xavier was a blessing to her. Also, her friendship with the Rev. John Wong and the members of his cenacle was very important in her life.
A private memorial is planned and a funeral will be held at a later date.
Memorials may be made to St. Francis Xavier Church or St. Joseph Elementary. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Hospice of Missoula.
A Memorial Mass will be held in her honor at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.
