(0) CommentsMISSOULA – Bernice Jensen, 93, of Missoula, passed away on Saturday, May 4, 2013, from natural causes. She was born Oct. 11, 1919, in South Dakota, to Fred and Mary (Elsing) Borchard. Her early education took place in rural South Dakota. She graduated from Central High School in Aberdeen, S.D., in 1937. After attending Northern State University in Aberdeen, she taught school for nine years in South Dakota. In 1949, she came to Missoula and taught school there for four years. In 1953, she married Wally Jensen and they became the parents of three sons. Later, she earned a bachelor of arts degree in education from the University of Montana, and spent a number of years working in preschool education.
She was an active member of First Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Women's Missionary League. Years ago she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir and worked in evangelism. Bernice led an active life. She loved music, reading, cooking, gardening, sewing, knitting, quilting and traveling. She hopes everyone knows that heaven is a free gift and is available to everyone who believes and trusts in Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior.
Survivors include three sons, Paul of Missoula, Bruce and wife Wendy of Tacoma, Wash., Robert and wife Jill of Tacoma; six granddaughters, Kara, Audrey, Kristy, Katie, Andrea and Lindsey, and great-granddaughter Leanora and great-grandson Silas. She is also survived by one brother, Bob Borchard and his wife, Arlene, of South Dakota, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one sister and four brothers.
The body has been donated to WAMI at her request. This program in Bozeman uses bodies for medical research, study and teaching. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 18, at 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church, 2808 South Ave. W. in Missoula. Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church or Lutheran Hour Ministries.
