Obituary for Benjamin A. Ulmer

Benjamin A. Ulmer, 96, passed away Sunday, Aug. 23, 2015, in Louisville, Kentucky. He was born May 8, 1919, in Rural Fullerton, North Dakota, the son of Martha and Alfred Ulmer.

Benjamin received a B.S. degree in industrial arts and an M.A. degree in education. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as platoon leader in the Philippines and Japan with rank of second lieutenant.

On June 1, 1947, he married Lenora Priebe in Edgeley, North Dakota. Ben will be remembered as a devoted family man. Second only to his family was his passion for developing a system of vocational schools throughout Montana. During the course of his 42-year career, he received a number of awards for his accomplishments in this area. Throughout his life, he was active in his church. In his leisure hours, he enjoyed fishing, informal dinners and card games with friends, gardening and in his retirement, travelling to visit relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Karl and Milton Ulmer; sisters, Anne Emde and Mildred Gebhardt; his wife, Lenora Ulmer; and daughter, Julie Ulmer Parrish. Survivors include a daughter, Bonnie Lea of Louisville; son, Paul (Helene) Ulmer of Reno, Nevada; son-in-law, Edward Parrish of Raleigh, North Carolina; sisters, Monica Hallerude of Independence, Missouri, and Gert (Ed) Anderson of Mesa, Arizona; sister-in-law, Frances Priebe; grandchildren, Luke Ulmer of Fort Collins, Colorado, Paige Ulmer of Rifle, Colorado, Eric Lea of Los Angeles and Monica (Jeff) Gordon of Louisville; and many nieces and nephews.

Viewing will be at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 202 Brooks, in Missoula at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4. Services will be at 2 p.m. at church followed by burial at Sunset Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of Garden City Funeral Home. Condolences for the family may be left at missoulafuneralhomes.com.
