Arnold Fairclough, 95, passed away peacefully in his home in Missoula on Friday, Sept. 27, 2013.
Arnold was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Sept. 23, 1918, to Bert and Sarah Fairclough. He attended grammar and high school in Salt Lake. Upon graduating from high school he was employed as an elevator mechanic prior to serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. Arnold was stationed in New Guinea and the Southern Philippines and was honorably discharged in August of 1945. Following his discharge, he returned to the business of installing passenger elevators.
While installing elevators at Fort Peck Dam in northeast Montana, he met his wife of 59 years, Doris Sweitzer. They were married in Glasgow in October of 1948, and moved to Missoula in 1951 when he was installing elevators in the then "new" St Patrick Hospital. He worked throughout the state for years to come, but called Missoula home from that point on.
He retired from the elevator business in 1985, and took up the game of golf. He was a mainstay at the University Golf Course for years, and scored a hole-in-one in at Larchmont in 1990. The only thing Arnold enjoyed more than golf was being around his grandchildren.
Arnold was preceded in death by his parents; wife Doris and sons, Trent and Bert, and daughter-in-law Myrna Fairclough.
Survivors include sons, George of Glasgow, Craig (Deb) of Renton, Wash., and Brad of Missoula; a daughter-in-law Karen Fairclough of Missoula; along with six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister Leola Holt of Taylorsville, Utah, along with several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you send memorials to Partners in Home Care of Missoula.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 29 at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be sons, George Fairclough, Craig Fairclough, Brad Fairclough; grandsons, Mike Fairclough and Kramer Fairclough, and longtime friends, Jake Ross and Richard Larson.
Arrangements are under the direction of Garden City Funeral Home and Crematory
