Obituary for Alice O Steen

Alice, 86, peacefully passed away Thursday, Oct. 29, 2015, holding loving hands. She was born Jan. 31, 1929, into a deeply rooted New Orleans family, the third daughter of Alice Guerin and Joseph Olike. Alice was a 1945 graduate of John McDonough High School, and then went onto become a distinguished customer service rep for Southern Bell Telephone Co. in the years prior to marrying and starting a family with Paul F. Steen in 1951.

Being a very dedicated mother, raising her "5 Ks" became her livelihood for many years thereafter. In later years, Alice served as a docent and costume restorer for the Beauregard-Keyes House Museum, and participated in other community volunteer activities. She and Paul relocated to Missoula in 2006 post-Hurricane Katrina.

A devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother, Alice had a deep, abiding love for family, friends and her New Orleans culture. She was a gifted seamstress, great Creole cook and a talented dancer. With her creative panache, outgoing charm and Southern gregariousness, Alice never met a stranger.

Alice will be missed always by her surviving family: husband of 64 years, Paul; five accomplished children, sons Kirk (Christell), Kerry and Kory (Bonnie), all of the New Orleans area, and daughters Karen of Washington state and Kathy (Larry) of Missoula; five wonderful grandchildren, Andrew, Rachelle (Brian), Marisa, Rebecca and Patrick; and a new great-granddaughter, Lucan Ella. She is also survived by her sister Joan Lapene, many nieces, nephews and their families, and lifelong friends Claire, Betty, Genevieve and Jeanette, all of New Orleans. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister June Brannon, and brothers-in-law Jules and Jack. Indeed, we will all be dancing together again.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the exceptional and caring team at Partners in Home Care Hospice and the loving staff at Riverside Health Care Center for the quality TLC bestowed upon Alice. She will be remembered at a memorial service/celebration in New Orleans this December.
