Obituary for Albert Byron Price

– Albert Byron Price was born July 11, 1936, in Butte and died at his home in Missoula on Thursday, May 5, 2016, of natural causes.

Al graduated from high school in Wallace, Idaho, in 1954, and joined the Marine Corps later that summer. After his enlistment, he rejoined his family in Missoula and began to work nights at the Anaconda lumber mill in Bonner and attend the University of Montana in the daytime. He earned his bachelor's degree and began working, completing his master's degree a few years later, which he earned with high marks.

Al was drawn to Alaska, where in 1974 he started a career with the school district as a counselor, spending most of his years in Barrow. His love and respect for the native Alaskans gave him a strong connection and respect within the community. He also worked on the Alaskan pipeline and took part in cleanup of the Exon Valdez. Afterward he moved back to Missoula and worked as a custodian at the University of Montana for 10 years before retiring to care take his aging mother.

Being supportive and philanthropic in the areas of higher education and the arts, Al had several local charities that he gave generously to each year as well as various grants at the University of Montana. He also was actively involved with Missoula Senior Center and will be missed by many.

He was preceded in death by his parents, C.R. and Rachel Price, as well as several aunts and uncles.

He is survived by his brother, Jim of Potomac; cousin, Kade Haviland of Lakewood, Colorado; nephew, Matthew Price (Victoria); niece, Jessica Wermager (Jared) and their daughter Sonora of Missoula; as well as other cousins.

Memorial service to be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 16, at Grace United Methodist Church at 10th Street and Garfield in Missoula with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Missoula Senior Center in Al's name.
