Agnes Vawter

October 15, 1930 — February 13, 2025

Agnes Egeland Vawter (Aggie) 10/15/1930- 2/13/2025

Aggie was born on October 15, 1930, in Livingston, MT, to Ebb and Winifred (Dailey) Strickland. She attended Park County High School and Boise Community College.

On 9/8/1948, she married her high school sweetheart, Thomas Jerome Egeland (Jerry). They moved to Big Timber, where they opened a plumbing business. Aggie was a stay-at-home mom and did the bookkeeping for their plumbing business. She taught music at a country school for a short time and taught a summer reading program. Aggie was also a member of the Big Timber Women’s Club.

When she and Jerry moved to Billings, Aggie pursued a degree in English and Library Science at Eastern Montana College. She was the librarian at Lewis and Clark Junior High until she retired. Aggie was a lifelong member of AAUW. Jerry passed away 5/30/1983.

While on a white-water rafting trip, Aggie met her second husband, John Vawter. They were married on 12/12/1993 until his death in 2017. Aggie and John lived in Portland, OR and Phoenix, AZ, before moving to Carmichael, CA in 2003. Aggie joined the Unitarian Universalist Society after moving to CA. Aggie and John eventually moved into Atria Senior Living, where Aggie became president of the resident’s board. She spent many years showing new residents the ins and outs of senior living as an ambassador. She also led the Dee’s Candy fundraising drive each year to raise money for staff at Atria in appreciation of their care.

In 2024, Aggie moved to Missoula to be close to her daughter Hollie and her Montana roots.

She was loved by family and friends alike and will be sorely missed. She is survived by her daughter Vickie (David), daughter Hollie (Jack), and son Mark (Leslie), her grandchildren Erika, Johanna, and Riles, and great grandchildren Trey, Ashlyn, Addisen, Thea, and Nora.

We would like to thank the staff at the Auberge, especially Robert, as well as Hospice, especially nurses Emma and Annie, who worked with her on a regular basis.

Aggie’s family encourages donations to Hospice.
