Condolence From: Mike Randles
Condolence: While working towards a leadership degree, I was required to write a paper on how a quality leader can impact their environment. Rather than attempt to please my advisor by researching some educational leader, I wrote my paper on how Larry turned an otherwise unknown independently-owned pizza restaurant into a virtual powerhouse in the Missoula delivery landscape. Young and somewhat misguided, I assumed that the first time I heard a customer’s fiery rant, Larry would turn on the East Missoula charm and put that customer in his place. Instead, Larry immediately de-escalated the situation, regardless of how unrealistic the customer was being, and ask how Stageline could make the situation right. I stood there dumbfounded by Larry’s calm and thoughtful disposition. To paraphrase Larry, though, it probably cost us $3.00 in ingredients but that we likely gained a customer for life that night. Larry, of course, was right.

Initially, I had difficulty reconciling the East Missoula Larry who didn’t back down to anyone with the professional Larry who would do just about anything for anyone. Ultimately, though, I realized that this is what made Larry, Larry. Fiercely loyal, street smart, and book smart, Larry was a rare breed for any environment but the fact that he emerged from East Missoula not only made him even rarer but more importantly he gave the rest of us knuckleheads something to aspire to.

I will mourn the loss of Larry. But I will also be grateful for having had those years of laughing, of flipping pizzas, of arguing over the Rams/Vikings, Lakers/Celtics, Mets/Red Sox in a point in my life when there was nothing more important than having another fixed star to guide me to a better place.

Thoughts and prayers and all my best to the Veitenheimers.
